Cultural Event

Date: 2009-06-27
Country: Canada
City: Whitehorse
Venue: Yukon Arts Centre
Event type: Multicultural Show
The second "Whitehorse Heritage Festival" was a much larger undertaking that the first. It was expanded from a fashion show to include cultural performances. Kim helped stage the overall show and organized the Vietnamese participation.

More description

For this show, Kim encouraged a small number of Vietnamese community members to participate. Kim greatly expanded the visibility of Vietnamese culture by organizing a Filipino group to don Vietnamese dress and sing a traditional Vietnamese song. In addition, she got a children's dance school to put on a couple of numbers in Vietnamese dress. Kim provided all of the costumes.

The political protesters from outside the community came to "monitor" the show, but this time they kept a low profile. They were occupied in trying to organize their own show -- they ended up putting on a military parade with RVN military uniforms and flags.

A staff member from the Vietnam Embassy in Canada travelled all the way to Whitehorse to present an award to Kim, and it was followed up by a letter. See the award presentation here and the letter here.
